Nederlandse militairen gedood in helikoptercrash Afghanistan

n Oost- Afghanistan zijn woensdag middag twee Nederlandse militairen om het leven gekomen door een ongeluk met een civiele helikopter bij slecht weer. Volgens woordvoerder Tom Collins van de Internationale coalitie is de oorzaak onbekend, maar hij wijst erop dat er in de bergachtige provincie Paktia, waar het ongeluk plaatsvond, er opstandelingen actief zijn.AP Report | Lees verder...

Bot steunt Israel, oppositie ontevreden

inister Bot van Buitenlandse zaken sprak vanmiddag in de kamer zijn steun en begrip uit voor Israel. Bovendien is hij 'buitengewoon bezorgd' over de gespannen situatie, de snelle escalatie en de mogelijke uitzaaing van het oorlogsgeweld naar de regio.De oppositie had bij monde van Koenders (PvdA), van Bommel (SP), Karimi (GL), en Bert Bakker (D66) geen goed woord over voor de 'slappe' houding van de minister, zoals van Bommel het uitdrukte.
De oppositie verlangde van de minister dat hij zich onverkort achter de oproep van VN baas Kofi Annan schaarde om onmiddelijk en onvoorwaardelijk een Staakt het Vuren op te roepen bij de Israeli's en de Hezbollah.

66 parliament leader Lousewies van der Laan declared on Wednesday that she might initiate a motion of no- confidence against the new cabinet.She wants to make clear that D66 does not support a cabinet with Rita Verdonk as minister of immigration. “If the Christian Union and the SGP don't support the no- confidence motion, they are making possible a cabinet with Rita Verdonk,” according to van der Laan.

umours have it that the third Balkenende cabinet may be sworn in this week. Balkenende III may give its government policy statement before the weekend.The “informateur” Ruud Lubbers will report on Wednesday morning to the Queen. She will delay her departure for her holidays in Italy if the formation so requires. If not, she will leave on Wednesday.
Lubbers spent Tuesday arranging the information provided by the various political leaders. He lists all subjects to be handled by the minority cabinet of CDA and VVD before the elections of November 22th.

Full powers to next cabinet according to CDA and VVD
ormer prime minister Ruud Lubbers, who is in charge of forming a new minority cabinet with the Christian Democrats (CDA) and the Liberals (VVD), moved on his first day with considerable speed.He received all party leaders to hear their views on the political demands and views of how to proceed in the next few month.

Ruud Lubbers in charge of creating new Cabinet
aturday afternoon Queen Beatrix appointed former prime minister Ruud Lubbers as “Informateur”of a full missionary coalition Cabinet of Christian Democrats (CDA) and Conservative Liberals (VVD). He hopes to do the job in two weeks time.The new Cabinet will most likely see no new faces in the ranks of ministers. According to Ruud Lubbers there will be a replacement for the two posts left open by the Liberal Democrats, Brinkhorst (Economic affairs) and Pechtold (Policy reform).
The Queen decided after consultations of all party leaders to look for a fully missionary cabinet, that can decide on important matters running up to elections in November this year.
Opposition leader Wouter Bos of the Labour party (PvdA) is disappointed over the missionary status, but he is satisfied with early elections in November. He is confident to make a good result.
General expectations is that there is a good chance he will win the election and will become the successor of the present prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
Prime ministers Balkenende has been unpopular for the last three years. The harsh reform policies he and the cabinet achieved haven't been applauded by the general public. The last three months though, there has been a change in his ratings in line with the soaring economy.
