Let the global technology race begin
n the second of two pieces on decarbonization, Isabel Galiana and Christopher Green argue that fostering a technology revolution, not setting emissions targets, is the key to stabilizing the climate.Summary
- Reducing carbon emissions requires an energy-technology revolution that has not yet started
- A slowly rising carbon price could provide long-term financing for energy research and development
- A global technology race asks parties to use scientific capabilities rather than to sacrifice future development
The fixation on near-term targets for reducing greenhouse-gas emissions at the climate meeting in Copenhagen has resulted in insufficient attention towards the technological means of achieving them. Let us not forget that the true objective of climate-change policy is to limit global temperature increases. To achieve that requires a revolution in energy technology and the courage to dispense with target-focused climate policies.
